A plan by the Toronto District School Board to charge students for tap water has some parents upset, reports say.

As part of a pilot program, the $10,000 vending machine was to be installed at Fern Avenue Public School, near Roncesvalles Avenue and Queen Street, according to the Toronto Star.

The machine would charge students 50 cents for water refills and $1 for flavoured water. The water is municipal tap water, but filtered and chilled.

The machine was supposed to be installed Monday, but parents say they weren't given fair notice about the plan and started a petition, the Star reports.

The issue has now been put on the agenda for Thursday's school council meeting.

The school's website says the project is meant to make up for lost revenue in schools from the ban on junk food sales.
