A substantial area of west-end Toronto was without power on one of the coldest nights of the year.

Pockets in the area bordered by Dupont Street to the north, Bathurst Street to the east, Queen Street to the south and High Park/Bloor West Village to the west reported power outages beginning at about 10 p.m. on Thursday night.

Toronto Hydro did not say how long it expected the power to be out, but said the outage was likely caused by flooding at a power station located at 1945 Dufferin.

Nightclub owner Mark Atkinson says his bar was full of people when the lights first flickered, and then went out altogether.

"We lost all our systems about 10 minutes before everything went dead," said Atkinson, who owns the Annex Wreck Room. "We lit a few candles and hung out. We were hoping it would come back on."

Overnight temperatures were expected to go as low as -20 Celsius with a wind chill making it feel like - 29 C.

While it was not clear if there was a direct relation, the TTC reported a disruption on the University subway line shortly after the power outage began. The closed section stretched between Eglinton and Bloor stations, but shuttle buses were put into service in that area.
