TORONTO - Toronto FC named Chris Cummins interim head coach Wednesday, filling the void left by the sudden resignation of John Carver on the weekend.

Cummins, 37, joined the MLS team in May 2008. He had been working as an assistant coach along with Nick Dasovic under Carver.

Dasovic is being promoted to first assistant.

Cummins and Dasovic ran the team Sunday when Toronto FC defeated Kansas City 1-0 but it was Cummins who was listed as coach and met the media afterwards. Cummins also took centre stage on the touchline the game before, a 1-0 win over Chivas USA, when Carver watched from a box in the stands.

Carver, 44, never returned to the sidelines, citing irritation at the league as a major issue. Club officials also hinted at health problems resulting from the pressures of the job.

Cummins, 37, came from English League One side Luton Town, where he had worked with Carver. He began his coaching career with Watford.

Dasovic, 40, is a former Canadian national team player with 63 caps to his credit. He has also served as a Canadian national team assistant coach and Olympic team head coach.

Toronto (3-2-2) hosts the Columbus Crew (0-2-4) on Saturday.
