MONTREAL — Mexico's embassy in Ottawa is calling the killing of a another Canadian in Mexico an "atrocious homicide."

Sixty-year-old Renee Wathelet, originally from Montreal, was stabbed to death in her condo on an island off the coast of Cancun.

Some Mexican media outlets are reporting she was stabbed more than 30 times.

Mexican authorities have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the killing of the mother of three grown children.

Wathelet kept a popular personal blog that chronicled her life in Montreal and Mexico.

Canadians have been at the centre of several violent incidents in Mexico over the last few years.

An Ontario couple were found dead at a resort in Cancun in 2006, while in 2007 a 19-year-old Ontario man was killed outside an Acapulco nightclub.

A Mexican doctor blamed the teen's death on a hit-and-run, but his family and friends believe he was beaten to death.

Also in 2007, an Alberta man died from severe injuries in Cancun.
