Toronto mayoral candidate Adam Giambrone has apologized for "an inappropriate relationship with a young woman," the Toronto Star is reporting.

The TTC chair's apology comes after the Star asked the politician about a relationship he had with 20-year-old university student Kristen Lucas for over a year.

Giambrone offered his "deepest apology to my partner, Sarah, my family and friends for the pain and embarrassment my indiscretion will cause them."

The woman, who was 19 when they started dating, told the newspaper that Giambrone's "live-in partner" has allegedly been at his side for "political" reasons.

The Toronto Star article continues with several quotes from text messages allegedly exchanged between the 32-year-old city councillor and the student.

Giambrone has publicly said he has a partner, Sarah McQuarrie.
