OTTAWA - It appears calling in Cuba's representative in Ottawa to discuss the issue of Canadians detained in the Caribbean nation has had some results.

Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Peter Kent said in a statement Wednesday that the case of 19-year-old Cody LeCompte, who has been unable to leave Cuba since a car accident in late April, was among those raised at Tuesday's meeting.

A Facebook page dedicated to winning the Simcoe, Ont., man's release says Cuban authorities have told LaCompte he can return to Canada.

Media reports say he was required to make a bail payment of 2000 Cuban pesos and return to address the accident in court if required.

Kent said in his release that the Cuban official was told delays in cases such as LaCompte's could affect the choices made by Canadians considering Cuba as a tourist destination.

LeCompte was driving a car that was struck by a dump truck in an intersection, but he was told he could not leave Cuba until a court decided whether he'd face charges.
