Environment Canada is investigating reports of a possible tornado touching down in Minden Hills near Peterborough and north of Barrie near Muskoka.  

Power outages, fallen trees and severe property damage is being reported.

In cottage country, about 150,000 customers were still without power hours after strong winds caused severe damage in the area.

According to Hydro One, at 9:30 p.m.:

  • 30,000 customers without power in Peterborough
  • 40,000 customers without power in Tweed, Bancroft
  • 25,000 customers without power in Orillia, Muskoka

The damage the region is widespread. More than 200 hydro poles have been broken. The poles will have to be replaced.

On Tuesday night, a severe storm hit southwestern Ontario.

In Orleans, 94 millimetres of rain fell in a half hour, according to Environment Canada. In the town of Ripley in south Kincardine, a garage building was lifted and destroyed. 

"At one point, a severe thunderstorm was generating over 1700 lightning strikes in one hour as it approached Hamilton overnight."
