A police officer is in stable condition at a Toronto hospital after he was shot at least twice in Lindsay, Ont. Wednesday morning.

Peterborough police Staff Sgt. Dan Smith identified the officer late Wednesday afternoon as Const. Keith Calderwood, a 37-year-old, 7-year member of the force.

Calderwood was shot while executing a search warrant at a house in the area of Georgian and Melbourne.

A 21-year-old suspect was shot and killed in the melee, Frank Phillips of the Special Investigation Unit confirmed.

Five others at the scene have been arrested and taken into police custody.

The dead suspect has not been publicly identified.

"I can't comment on the investigation that was taking place this morning before Keith was shot," said Peterborough police chief Murray Rodd during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

The investigation is now being led by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, an arms-length agency that steps in each time a civilian dies or is seriously injured or assaulted in the presence of police.

Stable condition

The officer, who serves with the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police, was airlifted from a Lindsay hospital to the Billy Bishop Island Airport in Toronto. He was then rushed to the trauma unit at St. Michael's hospital where some members of his family waited to greet him.

Sources tell CP24 that Calderwood was shot in the shoulder and leg. He was conscious and was able to speak with his wife before he was transferred to Toronto. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

Calderwood is a well-known community advocate. According to a bio posted on a Canadian Cancer Society site, Calderwood has served the Peterborough police since 2004. He has a wife named Carrie, two daughters and a son.

His family thanked the public for their concern and asked for privacy.

"The family is coping as best as they can considering the circumstances," Rodd said. "There has been a great outpouring of concern, prayers and support for members and his family."

'Bad day'

In a news release, the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service said one officer sustained injuries when police were involved in a shooting at about 11:20 a.m.

Police have not disclosed the circumstances but Rodd said the investigation was part of a joint effort between the two services.

"This was a bad day for our service," he said. "We're very thankful that our member is in stable condition and in good hands with the medical team. This is all I am prepared to say and need to say."

Lindsay is about 45 kilometres west of Peterborough.

According to Rodd, the last time a Peterborough police officer was shot was in the 70s during a call to a local Sears store. The officer, Dave Dobson, eventually recovered from multiple injuries.
