York Regional Police officers have resumed their search of a rural area where human remains were found on the weekend.

A human skull was found by a farmer near Whitchurch-Stouffville in an area off Warden Avenue, between Aurora Road and St. John's Side Road, on Saturday. That stretch of Warden Avenue is closed.

Police have sealed off the area and set up a command post, with officers conducting searches during the daylight hours since the discovery.

Investigators returned Tuesday to continue their search of the area, including some dense bush. The search will likely take place until the early evening, meaning Warden Avenue will remain closed until about 7 p.m.

It's not known how long the remains had been there.

The remains have been transported to the Centre of Forensic Sciences building in Toronto, where they're being tested to determine the person's gender, identity, date of death and cause of death.

The investigation is being handled by the YRP homicide unit and Ontario's coroner's office.

Police haven't said if foul play is being considered. There are several missing persons cases in York region, and police are looking into the possibility that the remains may belong to one of those people.
