Transit riders will face some disruptions this weekend because a downtown stretch of the Yonge-University line is closing for track improvements.

Subways won't be running northbound or southbound between Bloor-Yonge and Union stations from Friday at midnight to the start of service Monday morning, the TTC said.

During the closure, shuttle buses will be stopping at all of the affected stations at street level.

For those seeking an alternate route, the TTC is suggesting people take the University-Spadina subway line between St. George and Union stations and then transfer to a streetcar line that provides service between University Avenue and Yonge Street (paper transfer required).

People can board the 506 Carlton streetcar from Queen's Park Station, the 505 Dundas streetcar from St. Patrick Station, the 501 Queen streetcar from Osgoode Station, or the 504 King streetcar from St. Andrew Station.

Riders can also get on the 94 Wellesley bus just south of Museum Station at Hoskin Avenue and Queen's Park Circle to travel east to Yonge Street.

If people choose to walk, it's about an eight-minute walk between University Avenue and Yonge Street, the TTC said.

During the closure, all southbound trains on the University-Spadina line will stop at Union Station and then turn around and head north towards Downsview.

Part of the subway system is shutting down because crews are installing a new double cross-over section of subway track at King Station.

Once the work is complete, it will allow trains to terminate at King Station in the event of an emergency, the TTC said in a news release.

The track improvements will "provide more efficient and reliable service," the TTC said.

To complete the project, two additional weekend closures will occur over the next several months, but the dates haven't been confirmed.
