An organization that helps put food on the shelves at hundreds of food banks across the city may have trouble keeping up with demand unless donations pick up soon, says an official.

The Daily Bread Food Bank had hoped to raise $300,000 and collect 300,000 lbs of food by April 13, but with only $168,000 raised and 70,000 lbs of food collected so far it's looking increasing unlikely, Executive Director Gail Nyberg told CP24 Saturday.

"It has never been quite this slow and it is unprecedented," Nyberg said. "It is going to be very difficult to get to that goal."

Nyberg said the Daily Bread Food Bank needs to hit the 300,000 lbs of food plateau to be able to continue to supply its member agencies over the next "three to four months".

She encouraged everyone to consider making a donation; even if it is just a can of soup

Donations can be made electronically on the Daily Bread Food Bank website or in person at any fire hall, Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore or No Frills.

"Every little bit helps whether it is $1 dollar or $100 dollars; one can of food or one bag of food," Nyberg said.

Through its member agencies Daily Bread Food Bank is responsible for feeding 66,000 people a month.
