Downed wire stalls streetcar service

A downed power line stopped streetcar service on Roncesvalles Avenue shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

Nine passengers were on the streetcar when the 600 volt line broke, striking the tracks behind the streetcar.

Full service on the 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton streetcar lines resumed shortly before 8 p.m. after crews were able to connect a temporary cable.

Firefighters battle house blaze in Markham

Firefighters were at the scene battling a house fire in Markham Wednesday afternoon.

The house, located on Sprucewood Drive, is in the Steeles Avenue East and Bayview Avenue area.

Firefighters went into "defensive mode" and were fighting the fire from the outside after heavy flames were observed throughout the structure.

There were no reports of injuries from the scene.

Elderly man struck in west end

An elderly man is being rushed to hospital after being struck by a garbage truck in the city's west end.

It happened around 11 a.m. near Caledonia Road and Eglinton Avenue.

According to EMS, the man was travelling on a motorized wheelchair when he was struck.

The severity of his injuries is not known.

Motorcyclist seriously injured in crash

A woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle in Markham on Wednesday morning.

York Regional Police said the woman, a passenger on a Suzuki motorcycle, suffered severe head trauma in the crash, while a man who was operating the motorcycle also suffered serious injuries.

The crash occurred at Birchmount Road and Denison Street at about 7:20 a.m. The intersection was closed until about 11:45 a.m.
