Police have released a short video clip of Sonia Varaschin in an effort to revive their investigation into the unsolved murder of the Orangeville nurse who disappeared six years ago today.

Varaschin, 42, was reported missing on Aug. 30, 2010 after failing to show up for work. Her blood-stained Toyota Corolla was then located in an alley behind Orangeville Town Hall, prompting a massive search that culminated with the discovery of her body in a wooded area outside Caledon on Sept. 5.

The video released by police on Tuesday shows Varaschin laughing as she paddles with a friend in Tonquin Valley, Alberta.

In a news release accompanying the video, Ontario Provincial Police say they are still waiting on the tip that could break the case open.

“Since day one, investigators have repeatedly stated that a member of the public has the key piece of information that the detectives need to help solve this case. If you are this person and have lived with this information and have not yet contacted the police, then now is the time to make that call,” the release says. “The information that you possess may in fact help to identify the person or persons responsible for the murder of Sonia Varaschin.”

Police have received more than 1,000 tips

Police say that they have received more than a 1,000 tips from the public in Varaschin’s murder and continue to “regularly” follow up on new leads in the still active case.

As well, a $50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in Varaschin’s murder remains in place.

The murder, however, remains unsolved and police have not released any information about potential suspects.

Two years ago on the fourth anniversary of her disappearance police did publish surveillance camera images of two men who were spotted in an Alexandra Park gazebo near where Varaschin’s vehicle was located, however Sgt. Peter Leon told CTV News on Tuesday that those men have since come forward and been cleared.

A team of investigators from both the Orangeville Police Service (OPS) and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continue to work on the Varaschin case.

Any person with information is encouraged to call the Orangeville Police Service tip line at (519) 941-2522 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
