Toronto is getting one last taste of winter weather before the seasons officially change on Wednesday.

Shortly after 9 p.m., Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for the City of Toronto and much of the Greater Toronto Area, including Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering, Oshawa and southern Durham Region.

A couple of hours of freezing rain are expected before changing over to rain as the temperature rises above freezing.

“We will be seeing a significant storm system moving in this evening and it won’t necessarily be a huge snow storm but it will be a messy mix as the temperature climbs from about 0 C when the precipitation arrives up to 4 C overnight,” CP24 meteorologist Bill Coulter said earlier Monday.

Environment Canada is advising motorists to drive with caution.

“Motorists should expect driving conditions to deteriorate significantly once the precipitation arrives,” a statement issued earlier in the day reads. “Hazardous winter driving conditions are expected as untreated roads may become slippery and snow covered and visibility in areas of heavier snow may be quite low.”

Due to the expected conditions Air Canada and Porter Airlines are urging customers to check their flight status before heading to the airport in case of cancellations or delays.

Despite the late arrival of the winter weather, City of Toronto official Hector Moreno says crews are prepared.

"We are pretty much ready for whatever nature sends," he told CP24 Monday afternoon. "One hundred per cent of the equipment is with us until March 31 at which point 50 per cent of the equipment leaves and we keep the rest until about April 15."
