Police spent several hours searching Sunnybrook Park for an aggressive German shepherd on Thursday evening after the dog ran away when it was shot by a police officer.

The officer had been in the area, near Leslie Street and Lawrence Avenue East, when he was attacked by the dog. He said the dog lunged at him several times before he fired three shots at the dog, with at least one hitting the animal.

The wounded dog, named Coco, ran into Sunnybrook Park and managed to conceal itself until about 9 p.m., when it was located by police in an abandoned house.

Police remained at the scene until Animal Services officers arrived to capture the animal.

No humans were hurt in the incident and no charges have been laid.

The dog's owner says the family pet had never been a problem in the past and had not bitten anyone before. The dog will be treated and quarantined at the Humane Society before its fate is determined.
