LONDON, Ont. - Organizers have announced London, Ontario will host the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games next summer.

London will host more than 1,400 athletes, coaches and staff for the 12th annual national summer competition in July 2010.

Athletes from all 10 provinces, the Yukon and Northwest Territories will gather for the seven-day event.

The national competition serves as the qualifying event for athletes to become members of the national team for the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

Athletes will compete in eight official sports: athletics, five- and 10-pin bowling, power lifting, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, softball and swimming.

Competitions will be held in venues across the city as well as at facilities at the University of Western Ontario.
