WHITBY, Ont. -- Hundreds of people have descended on Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's campaign office to make an unusual donation -- used workboots.

The metre-high pile of discarded footwear is part of political stunt organized by the Canadian Auto Workers called "Give Flaherty the Boot."

The manufacturing sector in Ontario is being hammered by the economic downturn and the union had called on unemployed workers in several cities to donate their footwear.

Hundreds of people have gathered, some waving union flags, at Flaherty's Whitby, Ont., headquarters, just east of Toronto.

A union spokesman says they chose Flaherty because, as finance minister, he sets the country's monetary policies.

A spokesman for Flaherty says the boots will be donated to charity.
