The national food bank use has soared with a record 20 percent increase from the year before and the worldwide recession may be to blame.

A report from Food Banks Canada say food banks helped feed more than $1 million people in the fiscal year that ended in March.

Food Banks Canada executive director Katherine Schmidt says thousands of Canadians are facing difficult choices.

"Do they pay the rent, pay the hydro bill or buy food," she says. "We want Canadians to know that families and individuals in their communities are turning to food banks in increasing numbers."

On National Hunger Awareness Day on June 2, the food bank is encouraging people to donate more now then ever.
