Police were called in Tuesday night as tensions rose between city managers and striking workers at Coronation Park.

The entrance to the Parks and Recreation headquarters at Strachan Avenue and Lakeshore Boulevard was chained shut as the strike by about 24,000 civic workers rolled into its 17th day.

Striking garbage collector Ben DeSousa says about five managers were trying to take home city vehicles on Tuesday night to use the next morning for garbage collection.

But one city manager that did not want to be named says she only wanted to retrieve her personal vehicle. There are also unconfirmed reports that striking workers follow city managers home and dump garbage on their personal property.

Police made no arrests.

Meanwhile, the city said Wednesday that it's continuing to work with the striking unions to reach an agreement.

Toronto Mayor David Miller says the city is hoping to have a deal that's affordable for the city.

"We need a little compromise. We're working at the table," says Miller.
