KANDAHAR, Afghanistan\ - The United Nations says civilian deaths and injuries in Kandahar province increased 11 per cent last year and that operations in districts under Canadian command resulted in "large-scale" property destruction.

The UN released a report today that examined civilian casualties in Afghanistan last year.

It found that throughout the country, 2,777 civilians were killed, 75 per cent of whom died at the hands of anti-government forces such as the Taliban.

That's a jump from 28 per cent in 2009.

The report says Kandahar province had 42 per cent of southern Afghanistan's civilian casualties, the most in the region.

The UN says fears that Kandahar operations would destroy homes and crops were realized, adding that military vehicles that drove off roads to avoid improvised explosive devices destroyed walls and gardens in the process.
