TORONTO - A man faces 38 fraud charges in connection with a scam that robbed an elderly man of his life savings.

Toronto police say the accused befriended the 89-year-old and asked him for loans worth nearly $70,000 over two years.

The man allegedly posed as a contractor and said the money would help him complete a big project that stood to make a large profit.

Police say the loans were never repaid.

Kelly Marges, 44, is charged with 37 counts of fraud under $5,000 and one count of fraud over $5,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court today.
