A new provincial election poll suggests Ontarians might not stray too far from the choices they made earlier this spring when the federal government was up for grabs.

Fifty-five per cent of people polled in a Nanos Research survey said they are "likely" to vote for a party provincially that they voted for in the recent federal election. Or, from another perspective, one in five people will look to vote for a different party.

During the federal election, the vast majority of Ontario ridings were won by Conservatives and the NDP.

However, the first part of the Nanos poll, which was released Sunday, showed that in fact the Tories will battle the Liberals on October 6. The Liberals are trailing in the race by about five points. The NDP are in third place, with about 16 per cent support.

The poll, commissioned by CP24, CTV and the Globe and Mail, found that 18 per cent of respondents said they were somewhat likely to cast a repeat vote. Seven per cent said they were somewhat unlikely to and 11 per cent were more definitive, saying they were unlikely to cast the same vote. Eight per cent of voters said they were uncertain.

Voter fatigue

A second poll question found that voters are not tiring of the election process even if this upcoming provincial election will be the third time Ontarians have been sent to the polls in the last year.

Fifty-two per cent of respondents said they considered election time as a chance to renew their interest in political affairs.

Not everyone feels enriched by the process however. Forty-one per cent of respondents said they found elections to be a necessary nuisance.

Seven per cent said they are unsure about how they feel about the process.

One thousand Ontarians over the age of 18 were chosen at random to answer these questions through a telephone survey between August 10 and August 13. This poll is considered accurate 19 times out of 20 with a margin of error plus or minus 3.1 per cent.

Respondents were asked a number of questions about their thoughts on the election, the leaders, the issues and the parties. The findings of the survey have been released sporadically since Sunday evening. Links to those findings can be found below.

Stay tuned to CP24.com tonight and tomorrow morning as we release the final chapters of our election poll.
