TORONTO - A woman says her ballot was opened before being put in the ballot box Thursday morning at a west Toronto polling station.

Anne Adams says she handed over her marked ballot and the woman at the box signed it and then opened it up.

Adams says she questioned the woman and was told ballots were being checked to make sure they were done correctly.

Adams reported the incident at the Etobicoke-Lakeshore polling station to Elections Ontario.

Spokeswoman Michelle Goland says Elections Ontario investigated and found a ballot had been "mishandled."

Goland says the poll worker involved was removed and the polling station remained open.

"One of the poll officials, they mishandled the ballot while putting it into the ballot box," Goland said. "Because of that, the employee was replaced and the poll has stayed open."

The returning officer determined it was a "one-time" incident, Goland said.

Goland said about two hours before the polls closed that she didn't know of any other ballot box incidents.
