TORONTO -- There were hugs, claps and plenty of cheers on the set of the sci-fi series "Orphan Black" on Thursday as cast and crew members learned star Tatiana Maslany had scored a Golden Globe nomination.
Excited co-stars were positively giddy as they gushed over the high-profile nod, which pits the Regina native in the best actress in a drama category against Julianna Margulies of "The Good Wife," Taylor Schilling of "Orange Is the New Black," Kerry Washington of "Scandal" and Robin Wright of "House of Cards."
"Oh my God, we're so excited," Jordan Gavaris said during a break in shooting his part as Felix, a cheeky foster brother of one of the clones.
"I burst onto the set this morning into the hair and makeup trailer jumping up and down. We're just excited for her because she works really, really hard. She's probably the hardest-working woman in television right now. And after the Emmy snub -- and I'll call it a snub -- I think this is very, very well-deserved."
The acting coup recognizes Maslany's much-touted portrayal of a variety of clones on the dark thriller, currently shooting its second season.
So far, her roles include seven distinct characters, among them an uptight soccer mom, a street-smart British orphan, a cornrow-headed science geek, a murderous big-haired blond and a mysterious German.
Maslany's "Orphan Black" co-star Kristian Bruun says he heard about the nomination on Twitter.
"It was stupid exciting," says Bruun, who plays Donnie, the submissive husband to tightly wound housewife clone Alison.
"And then when Tat showed up onset for the first scene that we were shooting today, everybody was clapping. It was amazing. It's crazy. I'm still speechless about the whole thing."
Canadian broadcaster Space says it's "overjoyed" by the accolade, which puts an international spotlight on a relatively small show that has cultivated a dedicated sci-fi following.
"We are overjoyed for not only Tatiana, but the entire 'Orphan Black' team," Catherine MacLeod, Bell Media's senior vice-president, specialty channels, said Thursday in a statement.
The Golden Globe nomination is just the latest in a string of acclaim for the young actress.
Since helming the series, Maslany has collected acting prizes including a Critics' Choice Television Award for best dramatic actress, a Television Critics Association Award for individual achievement in drama and an EWwy Award for best actress from Entertainment Weekly readers.
Most recently, she won a Young Hollywood Award for breakthrough performance (female) and collected a best performance prize at the Whistler Film Festival for her upcoming feature, "Cas & Dylan," co-starring Richard Dreyfuss and directed by Jason Priestley.
She's also currently nominated for a People's Choice Award for favourite sci-fi/fantasy TV actress.
Bell Media notes that "Orphan Black" has made several prominent year-end Top 10 lists, including those of Entertainment Weekly, the Hollywood Reporter and Time.
Season 2 of "Orphan Black," produced in partnership with Space and BBC America, is set to premiere April 19, 2014 on Space.
The Golden Globe Awards, administered by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, take place Jan. 12 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The televised bash will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and airs on CTV and NBC.
HBO leads all television networks with nine Golden Globe nominations while the online streaming service Netflix snagged six nominations. Starz and Showtime also had six nominations each.
Big nominees include the final season of "Breaking Bad," which was nominated for best drama series and earned Bryan Cranston a nod for best actor, while Lena Dunham of "Girls" and Don Cheadle of "House of Lies" have a chance to repeat as comedy winners.
In the film categories, the historical epic "12 Years a Slave" and the con-artist caper "American Hustle" lead with seven nominations each.
