Emergency crews were kept busy battling a four-alarm blaze near Brunswick Avenue and College Street this afternoon.

The fire began around 12:30 p.m. on the third floor of a semi detached home.

Fire crews arrived quickly, but not before flames spread throughout the rest of the building, effecting two separate residences.

"When we first arrived we had a lot of heavy black smoke and an exterior fire that progressed quickly back into the building," Platoon Chief Larry Fry told CP24 at the scene.

Fry said the fire was challenging to fight because of excessive heat.

In order to protect firefighters from heat stroke temporary cooling stations were set up in front of the building.

The fire was also upgraded from a two to four-alarm blaze.

"It (upgrading the fire) was strictly because of the heat element," Fry said. "You can imagine the gear the guys are wearing and on a day like today you need to get them into a rehab situation"

Two people were home when the fire first broke out, but escaped without injury.

College was closed at Brunswick for about two hours.
