TORONTO - Pop songstress Nelly Furtado is teaming up with Olivia Newton-John in the film "Score: A Hockey Musical."

Producers say Furtado will play a zealous hockey fan in the comedy that's shooting in Toronto until March 8.

The Victoria, B.C., native joins a previously announced cast of Newton-John, Noah Reid, Allie MacDonald and Canadian musical acts Marc Jordan, Dave Bidini and Hawksley Workman.

Reid stars as a teenage hockey phenom struggling to gain the support of his parents, played by Newton-John and Jordan.

Writer-director Michael McGowan says he wrote Furtado's part specifically with her in mind, and notes she has "fully relished embracing her inner hockey fanatic."

"Score: A Hockey Musical" is set for release in Canadian cinemas on Oct. 22.

Furtado's previous acting experience includes a cameo on the TV series "CSI: New York" in 2007.
