Get ready to pay more if you take GO Transit.

As of Saturday, GO Transit fares will increase by 30 to 40 cents for the first time in almost two years.

How much more riders will pay for a single-ride ticket depends on the current cost of the ticket.

According to Metrolinx, single-ride fares between $4.20 and $5.50 are increasing by 30 cents, fares between $5.51 and $7 are jumping 35 cents, and fares worth more than $7 will increase by 40 cents.

All other GO fare categories will also be affected by this increase accordingly, Metrolinx said.

Due to the increase, there will be some changes to the fare discount structure:

  • People who buy an adult monthly pass will save 15 per cent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets
  • PRESTO users will continue to save 17.5 per cent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets
  • Students who buy a monthly pass will save 30 per cent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets
  • PRESTO student users will continue to save 35 per cent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets

Metrolinx's board of directors approved the fare increase at a meeting Jan. 9.

The transit firm said the fare increases will help to pay for more parking spaces at terminals, improved service, and facility and equipment maintenance.

GO Transit has announced it hopes to add wi-fi Internet service to its trains and buses within a year.
