Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been meeting with opposition leaders to discuss the fall agenda and a possible election call.

Before a meeting with Harper, NDP leader Jack Layton said his meeting with the prime minister would be a "charade".

"He seems intent on quitting his job. I told him if he's prepared to quit his job he can explain that failure to Canadians," Layton said after the meeting.

Layton claims Harper said there was little common ground between their parties on which to build a parliamentary consensus this autumn.

Layton said that if he were in Harper's position he would be calling meetings between the leaders to figure out how to deal with important issues such as the economy, health care, environment, and food security including the listeriosis outbreak.

On Friday, Harper met with Bloc Quebecois leader Giles Duceppe, who told reporters, "He wants an election. Period."

Harper is set to meet with Liberal leader Stephane Dion tomorrow.

Observers predict Harper will go to Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean sometime late next week to dissolve parliament with the general election date set for mid-October.

Meanwhile, in a surprise announcement British Columbia MP Blair Wilson joined the Green Party as their first member of Parliament.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May introduced Wilson as the newest member to join the party.

His appointment could mean May gets a spot on the televised leaders debate this fall if an election is called.

"With a Green MP sitting in the House of Commons, it will now be impossible to exclude the Green Party from the televised leaders' debates in the next election," said May.

Blair Wilson represents the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky country riding.

He has been sitting as an independent since resigning from the Liberal party last year after Elections Canada launched an investigation into his campaign spending.
