TORONTO - The head of Toronto's ambulance union is facing charges after two ambulances went missing.

Police say 45-year-old Glenn Fontaine is facing two counts of taking an auto without consent and two counts of mischief.

Fontaine is the chairman for the ambulance unit of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 416, which also represents thousands of City of Toronto workers who are currently on strike.

Toronto police spokeswoman Const. Wendy Drummond says the alleged incidents occurred Saturday and June 22, the same day thousands of civic workers walked off the job.

Around the time the strike started, Fontaine warned that paramedics' services could be withdrawn on the last weekend of June during the Gay Pride festivities, events that draw thousands of tourists.

Paramedics are covered by an essential services agreement between the city and the union that sets out strict rules for emergency services during a labour dispute.
