TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays claimed pitcher David Herndon off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

Herndon, 27, was 0-1 with a 4.70 earned-run average in five appearances with the Phillies this past season.

The six-foot-five, 230-pound right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last June after suffering a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow in April.

Herndon is expected to return by the middle of next season. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated right-hander Tyson Brummett for assignment.
