TORONTO - Julian Fantino has been re-appointed as Ontario's top cop for one more year.

Premier Dalton McGuinty says Fantino will remain the head of the Ontario Provincial Police until the end of July 2010.

Fantino, whose tenure at the OPP has at times been marred by controversy, has been at the helm of the unit since 2006.

His original appointment was extended in March 2008.

Most recently, Fantino has been fighting to have an adjudicator removed from a disciplinary hearing amid allegations he abused his power and acted unlawfully.

A search for his successor will begin next January.
