Video shows the moment police arrest three suspects following a “violent” carjacking in Oshawa.
Officers responded to the area of Nonquon Road and Mary Street at around 10:30 p.m.
Police say the victim had parked his vehicle in a parking lot when three masked suspects approached him. The suspects allegedly assaulted the victim before driving away in his vehicle.
The victim sustained minor injuries, according to police.
In the video released by Durham police on Monday, audio transcript of the call for service rolls out.
“There’s some guy yelling and screaming,” the caller can be heard saying. “Some guy running around screaming, ‘Help me, help me.’ And then I hear a car crash and then squealing wheels.”
Authorities say they located the stolen vehicle heading north on Stevenson Road, which failed to stop for police.
After making a turn onto Conlin Road, heading westbound, police said the driver of the vehicle lost control and crashed into a field at Anderson Street. Then the three suspects started to flee on foot, according to investigators.
In the video, taken from the vantage point of the Air1 helicopter, police follow the suspects into the greenspace where one of them appears to try and hide in the grass.
“Keep walking south, but walk east a little bit. A hundred metres southeast of you, and he’s lying prone,” a member of Air1’s crew can be heard telling officers on the ground.
That led to officers arresting one suspect while the helicopter moved to find the outstanding suspects.
“I’m going to be working on the other guy that’s entered the trees here,” the Air1 crew member said.
Police say they arrested all three suspects without incident, adding one of the suspects was found to have a large knife on them as well as an airsoft gun.
Jonathon Da Silva-Smith, 30, of no fixed address, Cammie Gibs, 19, of Scarborough, and Michael Mitov, 20, also from Scarborough are facing robbery and weapons-related charges. The charges have not been tested in court.
According to Durham police, this is the third “violent” carjacking over the last two weeks. In each incident, police say they were assisted by the police helicopter.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
