A Halton Regional Police officer has been charged in connection with a 2025 pursuit of a stolen Hummer that left the driver seriously injured.
Joseph Martino, the director of the Special Investigations Unit, said in a news release on Wednesday that there are “reasonable grounds” to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence in the March 12, 2025, incident.
Sgt. David Joseph is facing a charge of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm.
That March morning, Halton police officers were investigating the theft of a Kia Sedona from an Oakville home, which involved a stolen GMC Hummer, the SIU said.
The drivers of the two vehicles fled, and officers tried to stop them.
The SIU said a pursuit led by Sgt. Joseph ended in Mississauga, where the Hummer collided with a tractor-trailer in the area of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road East.
The 26-year-old driver of the Hummer was arrested and subsequently transported to the hospital with a serious injury.
“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” the Wednesday news release read.
The SIU said Sgt. Joseph is required to appear before a Milton court on Nov. 23.
The SIU is called to investigate whenever the actions of police result in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
