The Beer Store is closing 6 more stores in Ontario, including 3 in the GTHA

Retail analyst Bruce Winder says The Beer Store is winding down its operations as beer sales shift to convenience and grocery stores.

The Beer Store has announced that it will be closing six more locations across Ontario before the end of this year, including three in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA).

In a news release, the retailer said one location in Mississauga at 3535 Etude Dr. and another in Pickering at 1355 Kingston Rd., will close effective Nov. 2.

Also closing on Nov. 2 is the location at 4670 Bridge St. in Niagara Falls.

“Where we sell beer and collect empties is changing in Ontario as part of market modernization,” Ozzie Ahmed, The Beer Store’s vice-president of retail, said in the release.

“In an ongoing process, The Beer Store is adapting to market changes and making the hard decision to close retail locations. We know this is difficult news for consumers, recyclers and our employees.”

Stores in London, Mattawa, and Sudbury will also close on the same date.

The Beer Store says “all efforts” will be made to support employees through the closures. It is unclear how many employees will be let go, or if they will be moved to other nearby branches.

This is the latest in a series of closure-related announcements that the retailer has made since the start of 2025.

The most recent round of closures follows the province’s move to expand alcohol sales to corner stores across Ontario, which saw Premier Doug Ford broker a new deal with The Beer Store.

Part of the new agreement includes keeping at least 386 stores open until July 2025 and at least 300 until Dec. 31, 2025.

More than 60 stores have been closed or scheduled for closure across the province so far this year.
