A Toronto man has been arrested in connection with an alleged hate-motivated attack in the city’s PATH network as well as a separate assault at a downtown building.
The first incident happened at around 7:20 p.m. on Jan. 16 at in the PATH underground shopping complex, on King Street, between Scotia Plaza and First Canadian Place.
According to investigators, a male approached another person and spat on them.
Police say the victim then confronted the suspect, but as they did, he walked toward them in an “aggressive manner while uttering anti-Black racial slurs.”
The suspect fled and was last seen walking toward Scotia Plaza.
Both individuals were not known to one another and police are describing what occurred as an “unprovoked confrontation.”
The suspect in the PATH incident was arrested on Wednesday after Toronto police responded to a call for an assault near Yonge and King streets. They say in that case a man was asked to leave a building and assaulted a victim.
Darren Thomey, 37, of Toronto, has been charged with the hate- motivated offences of assault and fail to comply with probation in connection with the PATH incident.
He was additionally charged with assault with a weapon, fail to comply with probation, and fail to comply with release order.
His arrest comes after police released new images of a suspect in the PATH assault investigation just last week.
Thomey was scheduled to appear in bail court on April 9.
