Toronto police have identified the man killed in a shooting in Scarborough on Monday afternoon and laid a murder charge against a suspect.

Police were initially called to Victoria Park Avenue and Highway 401 at 3:16 p.m. and when they arrived, officers located 32-year-old Levon Byers with a gunshot wound.

Byers was later pronounced dead, police said. He is the city’s 17th homicide victim of the year.

Meanwhile, a few minutes later, police responded to another shooting call on Victoria Park Avenue at Sheppard Avenue East.

Police said a male driver got out of his vehicle and was suffering gunshot wounds.

Paramedics later transported him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said officers found a firearm in his vehicle.

In a news release on Wednesday, investigators identified the driver as 28-year-old Hakim El Mozazi.

He was initially charged with possession of a firearm without holding a license, possession of a restricted firearm knowingly not holding a licence, occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm and possession of a loaded regulated firearm.

Police said they later charged El Mozazi with second-degree murder.

Investigators have not said whether the suspect and the victim shot each other, only confirming that the two incidents are connected. It is also unclear if the two are known to one another.
