Large watermain break impacting traffic near busy North York intersection

This is the scene at Leslie and Sheppard where water is gushing out on to the road and there are closures in the area.

A large watermain break is slowing down traffic near a busy intersection in North York.

Early Sunday morning, a watermain broke along Sheppard Avenue East at Leslie Street, in front of the entrance to the Leslie TTC Station.

A city spokesperson said emergency crews attended that area to “make the area safe, assess the damage and complete repairs safely and as quickly as possible.”

They said customers from Ambrose to Provost roads, west to Leslie Street, are affected.

Sheppard Avenue East from Leslie Street west to Ambrose Road remains closed.

“We thank residents for their patience while this work is underway. We will provide updates as more information becomes available,” Jas Baweja said.

Toronto Fire Service (TFS) previously told CP24 they attended the scene as eastbound Sheppard Avenue was flooded. Police were also on hand, they added, for the road closure.

The city has since taken over, TPS said.

It is not known when roads in that area will re-open.
