Police have arrested two teenage boys following a machete attack and a robbery at a movie theatre in Whitby on Sunday.
Durham Regional Police said the teens were arrested on Wednesday without incident.
Officers were initially called to Landmark Cinemas at 75 Consumers Dr. at 12:40 a.m. for an armed person.
When they arrived, police found a 15-year-old boy with a “significant laceration,” they said.
The victim, who was at the theatre to meet a female he knew through social media, was approached by a group of youth and demanded he give his jacket, police said.
“When he refused to surrender his belongings, one of the suspects produced a machete, struck the victim in the arm, and then the group assaulted him before stealing his jacket and cash,” police allege in a news release.
The victim was taken to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
In a news release on Wednesday, the two arrested suspects were identified as a 15-year-old Oshawa boy and a 17-year-old Pickering boy. Their names cannot be released under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
They have been charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon and aggravated assault. The 15-year-old is facing additional charges of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and disguise with intent.
Police noted that at the time of their arrests, the two were allegedly in violation of release and sentence orders.
As a result, they’ve also been charged with failing to comply with a youth sentence order and failing to comply with a release order.
