At least five pedestrians have been struck by drivers in the GTA since Thursday night, with the latest incident sending a 79-year-old man to hospital with critical injuries.
The man was struck in the area of O’Connor Drive and Coxwell Avenue at around 1 a.m. Thursday and he was rushed to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition.
The driver, police said, remained at the scene.
The latest incident came just 30 minutes after a pedestrian was struck by a driver near McLaughlin Road and Derrydale Drive in Mississauga. That individual sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.
There were another three collisions involving pedestrians in Toronto on Wednesday night. Those incidents included:
- A fatal pedestrian-involved collision near Bathurst Street and Davis Drive in Newmarket at around 6 p.m.
- A collision near Humberline Drive and Finch Avenue West in Etobicoke at around 7 p.m. that sent a pedestrian to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
- A collision near Gordon Baker Road and Finch Avenue East in North Yor at around 7:30 p.m. that sent a pedestrian to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The rash of collisions involving pedestrians comes just days after the clocks rolled back by an hour with the end of Daylight Saving Time.
Toronto police have previously said that they typically see an uptick in collisions in the month after the clocks roll back.
