Published:

A collision at Yonge Street and Tower Hill Road in Richmond Hill has left a pedestrian dead.

A pedestrian has died following a hit-and-run crash involving two vehicles on Wednesday night in Richmond Hill, police say.

It happened on Yonge Street, just north of Jefferson Forest Drive.

York Regional Police (YRP) say they were called to that area at around 9:20 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle.

There, officers found a male victim on the roadway suffering from critical injuries.

“Despite life saving efforts by first responders, the male, a 27-year-old of no fixed address, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said in a news release.

Police say they have determined that the pedestrian was initially hit by the driver of a northbound vehicle, which caused him to end up in the southbound lanes.

A second motorist travelling south then struck the victim and did not remain at the scene, they said.

The first vehicle and its driver remained on scene.

At this time, there is no description of the second vehicle.

No charges have been laid.

Speaking with reporters at the scene, Duty Insp. Rich Gaudet, of YRP, said they received “numerous” 911 calls reporting that a pedestrian had been struck.

Victim not yet identified

He said the victim has not yet been named as investigators work to identify their next of kin of the incident.

“It’s very early in the investigation and (investigators are) keeping all of the options open,” he said.

“There’s still a lot of witnesses to be spoken to and we’re hoping to obtain video of this collision as well.”

The Major Collision Investigation Unit has been called in and has now taken over the investigation.

Roads in the area were closed for several hours as police investigated but have since reopened.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision and has not yet spoken with police or anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision is asked to contact YRP at 905-830-0303, ext. 7704.
