A man has died following a drive-by shooting in the city’s Entertainment District Friday afternoon, Toronto police have confirmed.
It happened in a parking lot on Peter Street, near Adelaide Street, shortly after 4 p.m.
The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was sitting in a vehicle when another vehicle reportedly pulled up alongside. As many as 10 shots were then fired, police said.
He was rushed to hospital with unknown injuries.
Police confirmed to CP24 at around 6:45 p.m. that he had succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Police have yet to confirm the victim's identity.
It was not immediately clear how many bullets struck the victim, however numerous bullet holes were visible on the vehicle at the scene.
“We are trying to piece together what actually happened,” Toronto police Const. Victor Kwong told CP24 Friday afternoon.
“It is concerning that it is out in the public and when people are coming home from work.”
No suspect descriptions have been released at this point; however police said they are looking for a silver car that is believed to be either an Infiniti or a Lexus.
One man whose office overlooks the scene of the shooting told CP24 that he heard about eight shots in ‘very quick succession.’ A woman then emerged from the passenger side of the victim’s vehicle and was comforted by another man.
“She was later escorted to a police vehicle and taken away, presumably for questioning,” he said.
Another witness who works near the scene described the incident as ‘shocking.’
“It’s not what you expect when you are in your office going about your business,” the man, who identified himself only as Glen, told CP24.
“There have been prior gunfire incidents down here, but never anything like this in the seven or eight years I have been working here.”
Peter Street remains closed in both directions between King and Adelaide streets as police continue to investigate.
