The family of a man shot by Toronto police on Sunday afternoon says he was dealing with mental health issues in the days before his death.

Police fatally shot 25-year-old Reyal Jensen Jardine-Douglas after pulling over a TTC bus in Scarborough.

His family's lawyer Glenn Stuart says the family told police where they could find him, the Toronto Star reports.

The family says they'd been looking to get the man some help late last week because of issues, including signs of paranoia, according to the newspaper. However, they say his behavior wasn't violent. A knife was recovered at the scene.

The Special Investigations Unit is not commenting on the case, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
