HAMILTON, Ont. - A refugee who had his ribs broken, vertebrae fractured and head gashed during a drug raid at the wrong address is suing Hamilton police.

Police burst into the apartment of Po La Hay, a refugee from Myanmar, in May 2010 while hunting for a drug dealer who, in fact, lived next door.

Hay says police beat him while he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground. Const. Ryan Tocher was acquitted last week of an assault charge laid after the raid.

Hay and members of his family have named Tocher and 19 other current and former Hamilton officers as defendants in separate lawsuits filed Monday.

Hay is seeking at least $1.35 million. His son and nephew, who claim they were also injured in the raid, are seeking a combined $1.2 million.

The lawsuit's allegations have not been proven in court.
