Some people are blaming the recent city strike for an explosion in fruit flies, while others are say the bug boom is just part of late summer in the city.

Experts say the temporary dump sites were perfect breeding grounds for the flies, which lay eggs in rotting food. Now that the strike is over, fruit flies have gone looking for new places to breed -- and that means kitchens.

Many stores in Toronto are sold out of fruit fly trap and pest control firms say they've been getting more calls about the tiny insects.

But while fruit flies are a nuisance, they are harmless to humans.
