People in the city's east end can now take advantage of two new bridges in the area, which were opened to traffic on Wednesday.

Mayor David Miller and Scarborough-Rouge River Coun. Raymond Cho unveiled the new bridges, which connect Morningside and Finch Avenues, and Neilson Road to Morningside Avenue.

Both structures allow for two lanes of traffic in each direction and have new sidewalks and bike lanes. They cost about $34 million combined.

Miller says they will improve safety and traffic flow in the area, while Cho says they will bring more customers to area businesses.

"In addition to improving traffic flow, the projects will improve pedestrian environments, biking opportunities and other features that will both improve safety as well as enhance the overall look of the community,” he stated in a release.

The new bridges are part of a series of infrastructure improvements happening in the city. Other projects include repairs on Simcoe Street and in the Queen and Dufferin Streets area of Parkdale.
