With Metrolinx eyeing dozens of possible locations for new GO Train stations, two local councilors are issuing a call for their part of the city to be included in the final list.

Ward 5 Councillor Justin Di Ciano and Ward 6 Councillor Mark Grimes say the Humber Bay Shores area that they represent is underserviced when it comes to public transit and have penned a letter to the regional transit authority to express support for a new stop at Park Lawn Road on the Lakeshore West Line.

“Transit in these two wards has always been inefficient, unreliable and often inaccessible to many users,” Councillor Di Ciano said in a joint news release issued Thursday. “Both Ward 5 and Ward 6 have been experiencing a period of intense residential growth and there has never been a more critical demand for better transit infrastructure than right now.”

Currently there are 63 GO stations spread across seven different lines in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. A report put before the Metrolinx board Tuesday said that more than 50 possible stations throughout the GTHA will be considered for a short list of new GO stops in light of new investments in the regional express rail system.

“By investing in a stop at Park Lawn, the province would take a substantial step in resolving current frustrations with service, parking and congestion for existing Etobicoke GO Transit users, while creating new transit opportunities for those in the immediate area,” Grimes said in the release.

The nearest station to Park Lawn at the moment is the Mimico GO Station, about 1.5 kilometres west of Park Lawn Road. The nearest station east of Park Lawn Road is Exhibition station, about 6.5 kilometres away.

According to the report, the proximity of a possible station at Park Lawn to the existing one at Mimico will be considered in the final analysis. Other locations in the area being considered for new stations include Roncesvalles Avenue and Kipling Avenue.

The next stage of analysis will include input from municipal and public engagement and will also take into account technical feasibility, overall effect on travel times and possible connectivity to other transit systems. A list of recommended new stations is expected to be ready by spring 2016.
