The funeral for a 6-year-old girl who was struck and killed at a Leaside intersection last week will be held on Monday.

Georgia Walsh was hit by a westbound van near Millwood Road at McRae Drive shortly after 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The young girl was rushed to hospital but died a short time later from her injuries.

The funeral for Walsh, who is the daughter of John Walsh, president of the Conservative Party of Canada, will be held at the Sanctuary at St. Paul’s on Bloor Street at 2 p.m.

On Sunday night, residents of Leaside stopped by a growing memorial for the little girl to drop off items and show support for the family.

One community member told CP24’s Travis Dhanraj that the scene of the accident is on her daughter’s route to school.

“To think that something like this happened and every day we go to school, the children are playing and this could have been avoided,” she said.

“That little girl left her bedroom and she never went back. That didn’t have to happen ... It just baffles me that this happened.”

At the memorial site, Walsh’s parents posted a note to thank residents for their support.

“Thank you for this extraordinary outpouring of love for our beloved daughter Georgia. These cards and notes are being collected for us to cherish,” the note read.

“The animals, which Georgia would have loved, will eventually be donated to Sick Kids Hospital and the flowers will continue to fill our community with endless love.”

Just days after the accident, an eight-year-old boy was transported to hospital with serious injuries after he was struck while riding a bicycle on Thorncliffe Park Drive shortly after noon Sunday.

Cassandra Jackaman, who was also at Walsh’s memorial Sunday night, said she doesn’t understand why there is not more awareness on the roadways.

“I really hope he recovers and this is not the same kind of story as Georgia’s story, which is incredibly tragic,” she said.
