Organizers with the Canadian National Exhibition are pledging to beef up security after a boy reported being sexually assaulted while attending the fair this week.

The 15-year-old boy told Toronto police that the sexual assault occurred in a washroom inside the Direct Energy Centre, located on the grounds of Exhibition Place, on Tuesday at about 1:30 p.m.

In a news release, police said the boy was approached by a man who struck up a brief conversation before the sexual assault.

The male fled and has not been arrested, though Toronto police were called to the grounds of the CNE Wednesday afternoon after a man matching the suspect’s description was spotted outside the same washrooms the sexual assault is reported to have occurred in.

“Safety of our visitors and employees is top priority. There are cameras located throughout the grounds and buildings, a visible and unseen police presence, and private security,” CNE spokesperson Annette Borger said in an official statement. “In light of the situation we are working with Toronto police and our security to further increase patrols.”

The suspect in Tuesday’s incident is described as Asian, 50 to 60 years old, five-foot-five with a thin build and thinning, short black hair.

He was last seen wearing a white, collared dress shirt that was unbuttoned and a white tank top underneath.

In the statement issued Thursday, Borger urged anyone who spots the suspect or anything else suspicious on CNE grounds to contact police.

“Each year we have what amounts to a small city with 1.3 million people on-site for the 18 days,” she said. “As such we encourage all people to be aware of their surroundings and if they notice anything suspicious to take precautions for personal safety and contact the police immediately.”

The CNE runs until Sept. 3.
