York Regional Police arrested a 25-year-old Uber driver in connection with a late-night sex assault in Vaughan.

Police said three women arranged to share a ride home using Uber’s car service. They asked the driver to pick them up from a Toronto nightclub and to drop them off in Vaughan in the early morning hours of May 17.

The Uber driver dropped two of the women at their homes in York Region without incident. But when he approached the final passenger’s home, police allege the man told her that “she needed to pay in cash or by other means.”

The woman told police she immediately became uncomfortable and asked to be let out of the car. Once the car stopped, both the woman and the driver got out of the car. The woman said she was sexually assaulted outside the vehicle.

A suspect identified as Osamah Al-Mandalawi was arrested at his home on Monday without incident, police said.

"This is a disturbing incident, and upon hearing of these reports, we immediately removed the driver in question from the Uber platform," Uber spokesperson Susie Heath wrote in an email. "We have been in touch with York Regional Police and will continue to assist in any way we can."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7441.
