BRAMPTON, Ont. - Peel Regional police have charged a Brampton, Ont., man they allege capitalized on the ongoing DriveTest strike to scam people out of hundreds of dollars.

Police say a man has approached about five people recently presenting himself as a Ministry of Transportation employee who is looking for ethnic minorities for employment opportunities.

Police say five victims accepted the offers, provided their resumes and agreed to pay the suspect hundreds of dollars in fees.

When the victims, who believed they were employed by the Ministry of Transportation, showed up at one of its offices they discovered it was closed due to the DriveTest strike.

DriveTest sites grant and renew driver's licences, and workers began a strike on Aug. 21 after talks broke off with their employer, Serco DES Inc.

Ian Pollard, 36, was charged with defrauding the public and personating a public officer.
